Divided Minds Twin Sisters and Their Journey Through Schizophrenia By: Pamela Spiro Wagner, Carolyn S. Told in the alternating voices of the sisters, Divided Minds is a heartbreaking account of the far reaches of madness as well as the depths of ambivalence and love between twins. Carolyn continued to believe in the humanity of her sister, not merely in her illness, and Pamela responded. Exceeding everyone's expectations, Carolyn graduated from Harvard Medical School and forged a successful career in psychiatry.ĭespite Pamela's estrangement from the rest of her family, the sisters remained very close, "bonded with the twin glue," calling each other several times a week and visiting as frequently as possible. Pamela's illness allowed Carolyn to enter the spotlight that had for so long been focused on her sister. ![]() But as the twins approached adolescence, Pamela began to suffer the initial symptoms of schizophrenia, hearing disembodied voices that haunted her for years and culminated during her freshman year of college at Brown University where she had her first major breakdown and hospitalization. ![]() ![]() Growing up in the fifties, Carolyn Spiro was always in the shadow of her more intellectually dominant and socially outgoing twin, Pamela. A riveting true story of sisters who were identical, until the voices began ![]()

Here's an excerpt I'm fond of from the chapter, “The Prescription-Strength Vibrator: Masturbating For Health”: I certainly wasn't going to read these passages to my mother (although given the pain medication she was getting at the time, I doubt she would have been offended). Anyway, there I was, cackling madly over the cafeteria food, with no one to say, “Hey, you gotta hear this!” to. ![]() I read most of this book in a hospital cafeteria (Mom had a hip replacement – she's all better now). I apologize for the over-abundance of long quotes here, but they are the best way to convey the flavor of the book. In Bonk (which for months I've been referring to accidentally as Boink, God knows what that says about me) Mary Roach takes on the subject of what scientists do and don't know about sex, and how they know it. Today, I’m proud to say that not only is our answer to the above question a resounding yes, but also the team is aligned toward our product vision, we’re shipping better software faster, and we’re making our customers happier than ever. One that prompted us to make drastic changes like throwing our backlog in the bin, saying goodbye to SCRUM, and adopting an entirely new development methodology: Basecamp’s Shape Up. Realizing (and admitting) we’d failed to maintain focus on one of the most important goals of any software organization was the harsh wake-up call our organization needed. ![]() ![]() ![]() Is the software you’re building delivering the most value to your customers? A very easy example would be his opening description of down town Odessa being devoid of pedestrians and the old down town Scott movie theater being shut down with the words “The End” on the marque. It seems to me that Buzz Bissinger deliberately points out and emphasizes particular facts that fit his narrative, while leaving out other facts that would diminish his thesis. I’ve discussed my second reading with people close to me who grew up in Odessa at the same time, to ask them how they remember those days. I just listened to the book, 30 years later, to see if my perspective on it and that time had evolved with the passage of time. I read the book, as a high school kid when it came out and, like so many from Odessa, was furious at the way my town was portrayed. I was a freshman in 1988 and knew several of the guys who played on the ’88 team and other people portrayed in the book. ![]() I grew up in Odessa and graduated from Permian High School. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Despite their best efforts, deaths from the plague continued to increase.
